History of Disaster

History of sediment-related disasters

During snowmelt and rainy seasons, collapsed sediments, generated from mountain streams at the southwestern foot of the mountain such as at the Osawa Failure, become debris flows. They eroded river channels, gradually accumulating while damaging fields and houses. The accumulated sediments are carried downstream again by flood flows, causing the riverbed downstream of Urui river to overflow and further accumulating sediment at Tagonoura Port, inflicting great damages on inhabitants living by the river.

Debris flows of Mt. Fuji occur not only during typhoon and rainy seasons, but also during snowmelt seasons in early winter and late spring.
