How did Mt. Fuji come about?

Ko(old) -Fuji volcano(About 100,000 years ago)

小御岳火山誕生 約70~20万年前

About 100,000 years ago, Ko-Fuji volcano started its activities between the South side of Komitake volcano and Ashitaka volcano.

This Ko-Fuji volcano erupted repeatedly, causing mixture of basalt rock fragments and volcanic ash, and mudflow to flow down the west of Fuji River bank and the east of the upper area of Sakai River.

Since Ko-Fuji volcano is 2,700m high, the erupted volcanic ash was carried east by the wind, forming the upper part of the Kanto Loam layer that covers the Kanto plain.

The mudflow from Ko-Fuji volcano can be seen from Shiraito Falls and Akaiwa on Mt. Hoei.
